Situated in Uganda’s far northeastern Karamoja region bordering South Sudan and Kenya, Kidepo Valley National Park spans 1,442 square kilometers of semi-arid savanna, rugged mountains, and open palm valleys. Known for its wild atmosphere, low tourist numbers, and large herds of elephants, buffaloes, lions, cheetahs, and zebras, Kidepo offers one of East Africa’s most authentic self-drive adventures.
Crucial Fuel Refueling Strategy
Fuel management is the single most critical factor when driving to Kidepo. There are no public petrol stations inside Kidepo Valley National Park.
- Gulu: The main northern city with major fuel stations, banks, and supermarkets. Always top up your fuel tank completely in Gulu.
- Kitgum: The final reliable fuel stop on the northern route. Fill your main fuel tank and reserve jerrycans here before driving the remaining distance toward Karenga and Kidepo.
- Kaabong: A small trading town for travelers approaching via eastern Karamoja (Mbale – Moroto route). Fuel supplies can be variable, so do not rely on Kaabong as your sole fuel source.
Overland Route Options to Kidepo
1. Northern Route via Gulu & Kitgum (Most Popular)
