It was formally called Maasai Amboseli Game reserve. Amboseli National Park is situated in Loitoktok District, rift Valley Province of Kenya. Amboseli has an endless underground water supply filtered through thousands of feet of volcanic rock from Kilimanjaro’s ice cap, which funnel into two clear water springs in the heart of the park. However, the climatic pendulum can swing from drought to flood, and in the early 1990’s ceaseless rain changed Amboseli into a swamp. A few years later the rains failed and the grass-covered plains turned to dust.
Amboseli is 39,206 hectares (392 km2; 151 sq. mi) in size at the core of an 8,000 square kilometers (3,100 sq. mi) ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border and is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants among other wildlife species.
Other attractions of the park include opportunities to meet the Maasai people and also offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
In Amboseli’s case it is big skies and far horizons combined with swampy springs and dry and dusty earth trampled by hundreds of animals. Activities In Amboseli National Park
Game viewing – Amboseli National Park has high concentration of Elephants, lions, buffaloes, Antelopes, water bucks among others. Such animals can be seen while on game drives. Morning, afternoon and night game drives. Expected animals to see during game drive include spotted hynes which can be seen early in the morning going back for its hide outs, bush baby and serval cat can be easily seen on night game drive, waterbucks, buffalos, baboons, aardwolf, leopards, jackals, lions, fringed eared, Thomson’s, Grants gazelles, Hippopotamus, zebras, elephants among other.
Birding – Over 400 bird species and they can be spotted along swamp areas, grasslands, acacia woodland such bird species to be encountered in here include; Greater flamingo, Lesser flamingo, long toed lap claw, Rufous chatterer, Spike-heeled heron, Tavete golden weaver, vonder Dicken’s horn bills, Dickinson’s kestrel, Common redshank, African swamp hen, pangani long claw, Hartlaub’s bustard among others.
Guided Nature walk – It’s conducted in the park to see hills, vegetations, animals, drainage features and listen to sweet melodies of the birds plus the snowcapped Kilimanjaro and leave with wondrous experience once in life time.

Traditional entertainments at the camp fire by the Maasai people is also amazing. The Maasai people perform traditional music, dance and drama.
Amboseli National Park is visited all year round however, dry season is the best for game drive and wet season for birding. Wet season occurs from April to end of May and from November to December – during the wet season, the park welcomes migrant birds.
